And we're back... (14/08/07)
Where to start? The good news is while we've been neglecting this website, we've been busting our asses making music and becoming an awesome band. There's been all kinds of stuff happening and I'll distill it down to the most relevant:
1. We are recording an album with the incomparable Roger Leavens at Boombox Studios in Toronto. This guy is the shit. Seriously, he does wonders and if you want to hear a sneak preview of what he's done for us, check out 'Dancer' on our myspace page. Our new album, when it's done, is gonna be awesome.
2. We released a split 7" vinyl single with our buddy Peter Project on Fuzzy Logic Recordings. The Woodhands side is 'I Can't See Straight' and you love it because it's tiny. Buy it online here.
3. We got a bunch of press, pretty much all of it good.
4. We just did a little mini tour of the West Coast which is the basis for a tour diary that's appearing in the National Post right now. Check out the first installment here.
5. We are going on a tour of the East Coast soon with our buddies The Adorables (with whom we play) at the beginning of September.
6. Maria Bui of Fuzzy Logic Recordings is helping to book shows for us and is generally being extremely helpful. Send her an email through the little letter icon to the left.
And that's the extremely abridged version. Paul and I are still kicking it, still having fun, and writing what we think are some pretty awesome songs and rocking what people tell us are some pretty awesome shows.
Europe and other matters (01/22/07)
I have to be honest, Paul and I are really starting to gel. And not just in the musical way. We've grown so intimate...Anyways, a beautiful side effect has been more dirrrttyness at the woodhands shows. Big up also to our friends Taylor and Maylee for splitting some woodhands girly vocals.
So when I wrote that our album is finished, I wasn't kidding. I kind of want to describe what it is and what you'll be getting when you get your hands on it in the 2007. This album is a labour of love, tentatively titled Prisoner on a Lonely Planet (though we sometimes call it Baggagetown). It's taken over two years to put together - recording started right after the first woodhands album was finished - and what can I say? It's a fucking journey. Erotic longing, desperate problem sex, dance floor throwdowns, and good old fashioned apocalyptic party tracks round out this strange brew. There's alot more singing on this album than the last one, different instrumentation, and (what I think are) tighter, better electro-pop songs. So there you have it: new woodhands shit. We'll let you know when it drops.
Also, any Europeans reading this might want to check out some Gentleman Reg shows in the first half of January - I'll be backing Reg on fake bass and keys as he brings Europe his unique brand of delicious, dreamy pop (though it means the woodhands show at Tiger Bar has been postponed until February 10th). I should also mention that Reg and I are working on a pop project that is in the super secret phase right now. It is amazing.
And finally - finally! Another Music Gallery show! We had so much at our last one that we needed to do it again. So woodhands is putting together a dream team of the best electro shit to turn that church into a heaving, throbbing, den of nasty sex energy for one night (January 27th). Kids on TV and Ohbijou are joining forces to create a super band for the night, and there are some VERY special guests that are going to help us light the place on fire (with music, of course). See you there!!!!
And I mean every single one of those exclamation marks. !
Big moments (11/26/06)
So much has happened in the last month or so. First of all, If you slept on the Don Valley Brickworks party, you missed out. What started out as possibly the worst night of our lives became a glorious orgy of music and dancing. woodhands played our first set with our new drummer Paul Banwatt who has definitely changed us for the better. I don't want to gush too much but I almost don't know how we played shows without him. The show was amazing – Holy Fuck, Kids on TV, No Dynamics, and about a million DJs too. A band called missile command (I think) opened for us and one of them cut his bare skinny chest with a broken bottle before they started shooting audience members with fireworks. Unsurprisingly their set ended with a fistfight. It was weird to play after that but people responded really well, and it was a mega-dance party. Kudos to all the organizers – I can't believe they even had a pig's head on a stick. And meat on a spit!
The warehouse party was the first of four shows we played within the space of a week; we know it's bad form but we really wanted to break in Paul (woodhands involves a LOT of hazing) and Pat was only in town for a week. All shows were amazing and special thanks to Billy Lo from the Joe Chan Millionaire's Clique from Miami and Trevor Coleman from the Kensington Market Clique for the freestyle battle at Supermarket. Also, big up to Gravity Wave for being so fucking dope at our Supermarket show.
Finally…and I mean finally…the second woodhands album is finished. Pat and I worked our asses off all week, finishing the final mixes. That night I left for two weeks of touring with the Bicycles and the Adorables, photos of which can be found on the internet somewhere.
So we have a new drummer, a new album, and some really cool shows coming up. We might even be touring Europe this spring. Don't worry – we'll let you know what happens with the album. It will change your life!
Warehouse Party Details! (29/09/06)
Hi!
So...here are the details for the warehouse party this saturday, with woodhands, Kids on TV, and other awesome bands. FYI this will be our first show with Paul Bandwatt, drummer who will destroy all of us.
What I've been told is the following:
1. basically you go to Sherbourne subway station.
2. in a newspaper box there will be a bunch of maps that will show you how to walk from Sherbourne station to the Don Valley Brick Works!
3. the walk will be along a path bordered by bright orange tape.
4. once you get there, it's pay what you can + you should also bring your own booze (though i think you can discreetly buy booze there if you want).
5. come early to catch woodhands (by early I mean 11:30 - we'll be done by midnite).
6. stay late - Kids on TV is closing the show and I'll be playing with them.
If you want better directions, go to http://www.famefame.com/unk-unk/event.html over the next few days. Info will be going up there soon.
Alright! We are super excited.
Details about our shows next week to come - but come to our show with our friend PDF Format next week.
crazy woodhands weekend? (29/09/06)
Alot has happened; there is a lot to talk about. But I can't do that right now. There are more pressing concerns::
There are two woodhands shows this weekend!
1. Saturday Sept. 30th: woodhands vs. 100% woOL @ White Orchid (Just west of Bathurst on Dundas, north side of the street). I think this show starts at 10.
2. Sunday Oct. 1st: Sketcherson's Sunday Night Live after-party @ Brunswick House (west of Bathurst on Bloor, south side of the street). Comedy starts at around 8. woodhands plays around 10:30 - 11 PM.
Both shows are going to be super awesome amazing especially because Pat is coming in from Vancouver to play bass. I've missed him alot and it'll be so nice to play with him again. Also: Saturday night, Gentleman Reg is going to stop by and lend his heavenly vox to a few tunes at the White Orchid.
woodhands will be a raving mess after the Saturday night show as we enjoy the Nuit Blanche into the wee hours of the morning. Most intriguing things I've heard so far: Pool Party at trinity bellwoods park (sounds familiar...!), inflatable all-filled community centre with 10-year-old DJs, and this crazy fog sculpture thingy.
See you this weekend!
xo haywood govert flinck
Oh yeah - the secret show with Kids on TV is now less of a secret...and the date has changed to October 28th. It's going to be an all-night kind of thing, with great electro bands, DJs, video and visual artists, etx.
Toronto Bound (13/07/06)
Well, the Casbah show on Saturday at Pat's Pub was super fun. Maybe our best show yet. Big thanks to John Cougar from Nordictrax for putting it all together, and to Digi Horse for opening in an unforgettable way.
Gentleman Reg repped it hard and the woodhands boys reached deep for the best beats and grand emotional ranges that we've produced so far. Watch out Toronto!!! New collabos with all kinds of people are in the works, and we're back and hitting the ground running with shows at the Palais Royal in honour of the CD release of friends and colleagues The Adorables (September 16) and at el Amigo versus new arch-nemesis 100% woOL (September 30th). There's also an early October secret show in the works...details forthcoming...and east coast touring with No Luck Club and others in November.
And if you're in Vancouver this coming Friday, September 1st...well...we said the Pat's Pub show was our last on the west coast, but we are a last minute addition to a night at the Media Club featuring local electro act FNDMNTL and those assholes the screaming eagles. woodhands is on early - like, 9:30 sharp. By the way, if you haven't grabbed their new album yet, get it here.
And welcome to Colleen Berg who is now handling publicity and helping with show bookings in anticipation of our European tour next summer. If anyone in Europe wants to book us, or if you know someone who does, get in touch with Colleen by clicking on the little envelope to the left of this sentence.
Till next time we meet!!!!
Recorded Music (13/07/06)
So...we haven't mentioned it in a while but we are still working on a second woodhands album. It's sounding pretty dope and you can hear some of the rough drafts on our myspace site (myspace.com/woodhands). It's a little different than our first album but it is super dope so far. We really want to have at least six of the songs done in the next three weeks, and we'll get there damnit! As long as I can stretch my voice to places that it's never been before.
Which is all really to say that we're having fun with it, it's playful and orgasmic and moody. Just like us on a good day.
And come to our [open/inputs] show next friday! AJ Bond will be doing visuals again. We plan on widening the frequency range of this usually minimal techno night.
Raves! (13/07/06)
We played a rave…I think the last time we did this was right before the first ever woodhands website posting. I imagine you can scroll down all the way to the bottom to check it out.
So since being back in Vancouver, we’ve actually become total slackers – we didn’t list two shows on this site (though we threw them on our myspace page). We're sorry - it won't happen again. This site will be updated on time from now on.
Our latest show was Soundwave, the crazy four-day rave up in Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island. We had fun. Highlights included walking into a mobile sauna wherein two people were having sex, Doc Martin’s set on Saturday night, the gorillas, and playing maybe our best show ever at 5:30 AM on Sunday, then getting in the van and driving back home. If you want to hear one of our tracks from the show, you can go to www.myspace.com/woodhands and click on the ‘LIVE – can’t see straight’ button.
Our other show was the Vancouver cd release of the vinyl republik Canadian electronica compilation with our friends No Luck Club and Sinewave. No Luck Club were great as always and I was pleasantly surprised by Sinewave, whose album I heard (and think is awesome) but who I had never seen live. The night was pretty fun but it reminded me why bands should never, ever play the Pic Pub, and I’m not joking. The venue is very unfriendly to bands and generally badly run. It seemed especially shitty after playing shows in Toronto where venue owners and booking agents actually care what music is being played in their space.
Coming up is our open / inputs show at Soma in Vancouver on August 4th, and then a show at Pat’s Pub on August 26th with special guest Gentleman Reg, who’ll be singing with the woodhands boys on some new, secret collaboration tracks. Stay tuned…
POOL PARTY! (8/05/06)
Yes yes it's true.
woodhands is throwing the first pool party of 2006! This Friday, May 12th, at the Trinity Bellwoods Community Centre Swimming Pool. 10 PM till Midnight! Only 5$! All ages! The swimming pool is in the community centre, near the southwest corner of the Park (around Queen West and Crawford).
woodhands financing has rented out the pool to appease all of the Toronto kids and whoever else is around. We know you want electronic music + water + painting.
So come down and swim! You'll be able to hear woodhands and Minus Smile (Kids on TV DJ) play dance music from under the water. Bring a bathing suit! 10 PM to Midnight! This thing is going to be wet n wild! Tell your friends!!!
Yeah! woodhands will be in waterwings.
Patio/Festival (4/05/06)
okay, so the closing day of the over the top festival here in toronto happens next sunday afternoon and we are playing on the drake hotel's rooftop patio...the patio should clinch the deal. it's also with a bunch of other bands including friends/archrivals The Bicycles and a band from brooklyn fronted by four cheerleaders...? so it's worth your while. next sunday, woodhands plays at 4 pm. check out www.overthetopfest.com for more details.
in other news, we are really, really close to having the second record done. we are super excited about it and it should make the hipsters smirk as they dismiss us.
also: woodhands (in expanded form) is relocating to the west coast for the summer months, so if you are a promoter out there and want to book us, drop us a line. we're hoping to repeat at soundwave (the home of 'you're a very good dancer!!!!!!') and we are playing a cbc radio 3 sponsored show at the pic pub in vancouver on june 17th, in support of the launch of vinyl republik's new electronica compilation, which features a track from woodhands.
finally – a couple interviews we forgot to post about the wavelength festival are now available in the press section... they are kind of outdated but oh well.
see you on sunday... woodhands will be choking on too many hotdogs.
Destroyed bars, Masterpieces, and Steel Town Revisisted (16/03/06)
Before anything else just a note that we're playing Hamilton at the illustrious Pepper Jack Cafe again this Saturday with Books on Tape and friends Stop Die Resuscitate. Also, we're working on some exciting shows over the next few months...won't spill the beans yet...but they'll be glorious.
So I forgot to post our speakeasy show a few weeks ago...it went well. I played Nathaniel Sterning, adjudicator at Newmarket's One-Act Play Festival. Rosie played Susan Pudding, winner of the Most Promising Actress Under the Age of 17 Award. So in short: nobody laughed. In fact, one guy (who I didn't know) even yelled that Nathaniel wasn't my real name.
Luckily Speakeasy subsequently got condemned and is now closed and gutted. Poor Keith Hamilton (Pitter Patter night promoter, who is now on the hunt for his tenth venue in like, a year), the only guy in Toronto with worse luck than woodhands.
But Spring is in the air. We're feeling positive. Before Roselle left for Vancouver she laid down some serious vocals on our new masterpiece, Euroclash (most people know it as "YOU'RE A VERY GOOD DAN-SSAAAHHH!). I then did some yelling on it in my best euro accent. Pat is out earning his dues as pop consultant on the upcoming second! woodhands album. It's sounding strong. We're hoping to have it out in the next six months (but I said that on the air in Calgary during our tour last August, so who knows). It's been fun. And more's coming soon.
Two last things: Chris Von Szombathy's epic 3-Album Audio Awdeo Ahdio project is dropping on April 8th in Vancouver at WRKS DVSN at 269 powell street. And if you're in Vancouver also lookout for the debut Screaming Eagles album. It's out soon and is amazing. So is the debut Adorables album, which features some Dan Werb playing glockenspiel and possibly clarinet and is out soon.
A Rebirth? Or Redux? (9/02/06)
So. Here we are. It's February already. no shows in months. woodhands has been hibernating/rotting/rebirthing. Never got too sad about the drum machines or the vocoder. It was really the delay pedals that got me down.
But enough of that - we are back, different as always, dressed to the nines, and ready and willing to rock out again. that's right: we have a show, finally. we're not back up to full mechanical capacity but that's the fun of it isn't it? Making sure that every show is a challenge...i think we were getting a little too comfortable myself.
Well, Saturday night at the music gallery will see woodhands decidedly uncomfortable as dan tries to remember what numbers correspond to the recently reprogrammed drum beats. It'll be hilarious, and it's only going to last half an hour, and it starts at 8 PM.
See you there! and dan's playing with the adorables on sunday at sneaky dee's so you should come here him glock it up.
pan pan!
Bad Things Happen (22/11/05)
So. We are not playing the Wavelength fundraiser. This makes us sad. The reason is that some asshole stole some equipment from Dan's car so we're temporarily without drum machines...which you all know are the lifeblood of woodhands.
Anyway, we're getting the shit replaced but it's going to take a few weeks. So bear with us.
Crazy Alert! (28/10/05)
So...something crazy did happen. Jesse Savath came to Toronto and is going to be launching an exhibition of his photography at Reset Gallery, which is at 803 Queen West. It's all going down on Friday, November 5th. And the crazy news is that woodhands is playing a FREE show that night to help our friend Jesse launch his photos in style. You should all come out...but of course you should also all come out to the Michael Columbia show the night before.
Later.
It's Been Awhile (24/10/05)
Okay, okay, so we've been lazy. We've even had some shows that we haven't posted. But they're up now - although two of them are over. By the way, for those of you living in Toronto who missed the Indie Rock Rave, you are idiots.
The tour is over and it was great. We got really good at playing the songs. Also, some guy compared Dan to the uncool keyboard player in School of Rock in a blog about our Pop Montreal show. So that's good news.
We are now playing shows in Toronto for the foreseeable future, so in the show dates sidebar all the venues are in Toronto unless otherwise stated. Sadly we couldn't make it out to Halifax Pop Explosion after our glands inflated to epic proportions. So we're really sorry to Halifax people if they were hoping to see us, and to the HPX people too - we feel really, horribly guilty.
Aside from that stuff, we're still recording a bunch of new material and Jesse Savath is coming out to Toronto to shoot a video for one of our new songs which will be released soon (and by soon, I mean in the next while).
So yeah. We've got some shows coming up and there's even talk of Dan playing some keys with Toronto friends The Spitfires and Mayflowers. So things are good and we'll let you know if anything crazy happens.
An Update (14/09/05)
Attention! The New Forms Festival show with the Junior Boys is now September 23rd, not September 24th. Mark your calendars. I think it's going to be killer, especially because my sister Jess Werb is going to be playing cello with us...ominous low noises...vibrato tones...you know the drill.
Dan
Tour 101 (6/09/05)
A few things we have learned on the tour:
-
Dandi Wind and Szam are cool.
-
So are the Museum Pieces
-
Don't get a speeding ticket in New Brunswick
Yes, it's true, we are now fugitives. But don't worry: we'll work it out. We may have to lay low for awhile though.
Roselle is back in Vancouver, Pat and Dan are almost back in Toronto. Next show: Hamilton with A Northern Chorus. We're tired but for chrissake we just drove across the biggest country in the world.
East Coast (1/09/05)
We've finally hit another ocean and it's beautiful out here. We think tonight's show might be the best we'll ever play. Of course we always think that. But good news - we've got a new show: we're playing Hamilton on September 8th with a Northern Chorus. It's on September 8th. Tell all your hamiltonian friends...
Still On The Road (28/08/05)
So. The tour is going really well - we've been playing shows across the country with a lot of cool bands - most recently last night in Montreal with Dandi Wind. We've had consistent turnouts across the country so that's nice, and we've still got a whole wack of shows to play - Halifax on September 1st at the Khyber Club is next. Then after that we're into the festival zone...Ear to the Ground...New Forms...Pop Montreal...and even maybe Halifax Pop Explosion if we can find our way out there again.
We'll be playing Pop Montreal with No Luck Club and no-1. It's going to be on September 28th. Pat and Dan are going to be holed up in Toronto for the next few weeks, recording some new songs and trying to find out what the city's all about. I think it has something to do with money. We've gotten all inspired on the road by the usual Canadian things. Hopefully that means more crrazzzzyyy songs to come.
On The Road (9/08/05)
So. The Media Club show was rad. Tons of people came out and they danced. I was pretty impressed. We've got a pretty good recording of it so hopefully we can throw some of it up on the site soon. And this is only Vancouver... next up is Broken City in Calgary on the 14th. Get excited. We've never been to the land of the rodeo before. Should be a trip...
And we got into the Ear to the Ground Festival in September! It's in Toronto. We're playing on September 17th. Yes.
The Tour Begins (2/08/05)
It's an exciting time for woodhands because we're going on tour. We are also super stoked as none of us have ever attempted this before. A date is still pending for ottawa, but other than that, everything is locked into place. Our first show is going to be Friday August 5th at the Media Club in Vancouver. 7$ and you get to see Calamalka and the first ever show from no-1, Jarrett Martineau's solo project. It's going to be fun.
Just so you know, right now we're a three-piece - Roselle's singing, Pat (from the Screaming Eagles) i son bass and is acting as our very own professor of pop, and Dan is on the beats and the keys.
We just played a crazy show at a crazy place called Soundwave. How to describe it...well, it's next to Clayoquot Sound...it's all outdoors...it's filled to capacity with ravers...and hippies...and other people who love to dance and got all stoked on our music...everyone went swimming in the ocean the morning after our show and we all looked long and hard at the tide pools.
Next up is the rest of Canada. Then we've got a few festivals in September and October that are looking pretty positive...can't say for sure 100% right now about where we'll be going, but hear this: woodhands is playing September 24th at the New Forms Festival in Vancouver with Junior Boys. It's going to be a synthpop orgy.
Bye,
woodhands
